Anglo Platinum is continuing with its Unki platinum project in Zimbabwe while circumstances in the politically unstable country allow it as Zimbabwe is deemed important to the company's strategic growth.
The company's current strategy for Unki, located near Gweru on Zimbabwe's Great Dyke, is to start producing platinum in two years, but Angloplats concedes that its plans for the project will be influenced by events in and around Zimbabwe.
The project is planned to produce 150,000 ounces annually in terms of current design but holds more long-term potential as both the mine and concentrator could be expanded, former joint acting CEO Norman Mbazima said yesterday.
Mbazima said Zimbabwe was important to the company's long-term position as it held the one important geological platinum formation outside South Africa. Anglo Platinum is continuing with the development of Unki as planned and would react to developments in Zimbabwe as they occurred.
