This interview with Russian historian Boris Borisov is more interesting for his analysis of the current economic crisis at the end, than for the statistics on how many people disappeared during the Great Depression. Because it is obvious that many more will disappear this time. No longer can you go to the nearest small family farm and ask to work for food. The small family farms have almost all disappeared, swallowed up by big agra, and you can't go to a big agricultural corporation and ask for a handout.

So we are likely to have great civil unrest like the hunger marches again, it will be suppressed by the police, the army, and Homeland Security again, and millions will "disappear" again. But many millions are likely to be rounded up and to die at forced labor in detention camps. And it won't matter who is President. Obama also voted for the bailout. There is nobody in the U.S. government with the power to say, "These people are hungry. Don't shoot them -- feed them!" Our bankrupt and indebted government couldn't feed us if it wanted to because it has to feed the greedy instead of the needy.
What does the U.S. produce of value? Weapons. Weapons don't feed people, they kill people. So our government will use the only resources it has, to do the only thing it can do: kill us.
