One dead gorilla is news – a guerrilla war is not
http://www.independent.co.uk/news...-guerrilla-war-is-not-827451.html
Excerpt:
The massacre of the silverback Senkekwe, along with five other rare apes, made the cover of US magazine Newsweek under the headline "Gorilla Warfare". In Britain, the "Murders In The Mist" prompted The Sun to launch its own campaign, and around the globe people wrote in to media outlets, telling of the sleepless nights and trauma the images had caused.
For Anneke van Woudenberg, the Congo specialist for Human Rights Watch, it was a case of gritting one's teeth. "Kill a mountain gorilla in Congo and it gets much more coverage than five million dead," she says. "It irks me every time."

It really is too bad that we seem to care more about animals than each other. I understand that is because animals are "innocent" while humans are aware and knowingly cruel and dishonest. I believe that is probably the real reason though I still think its a poor one. There are far too many innocent people also, especially children and they are certainly a big part of the humanitarian crisis, if not the biggest part. (In my opinion.)
You know, my own experiences have been that people who aren't as concerned with animals are the ones that have been the kindest and most likely to share with me when I've been out of the U.S. (I'm talking Asia, and would like to add that I never had anyone try to feed me cats or dogs though am sure that if I had wanted it, I might have been directed to such a place.)
I think sometimes, you find what you look for and I found people that were kind and considerate and though people weren't wrapped up in animal rights, they weren't terrible abusive either. They just had other concerns.
Thanks Mark. |

Scary as hell. Most popular stories on C2N today (and I am not making this up) :
Cat Tossed From Car in Georgetown
Petition: "No Cows In Wild croquet Country!"
Premier Tonight! Animal Cops Philadelphia ~ PSPCA Animal Cruelty Investigators Featured on Animal Planet, Wed., 10 PM ET/PT
Petition: BLM Ranchers Cruel to Wild Horses
How Do I Love Me? Let Me Count the Ways...
Embracing Life
The Beijing Olympics - No Fair Play for Animals- PETITION
This last one alone is a keeper....fair play for animals in China?
Anybody knows about networks/forums other than care2 where real news are discussed? I hadn't gone back there (I only come here) in months but I can see it hasn't changed.
Cheers,
John |

The problem is that freedom of the press isn't free. Those who can afford to start a large network are those who have the interests of wealthy elites like themselves at heart.
So many of us make do with free forums like this and with darting in and dealing an occasional glancing blow to the gatekeepers when possible.
Some of my long-time online friends have followed along with me as I've been banned from website after website for many years.
Just another of those long strange trips, John.
