Excerpts:

Bhopal Campaign on Path to Victory

On October 15, 2008, the Business Ethics Network (BEN) honored the International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal with a Path to Victory Award. BEN members from over 150 non-profit and social justice organizations

The award comes at a time when Dow Chemical Company is finding it increasingly difficult to invest in projects in India due to stiff resistance by communities (see the Dow Quit India update!). As the 25 th Anniversary of the Bhopal Gas Disaster approaches, this award is particularly meaningful. ICJB has celebrated many milestones towards justice in Bhopal, including the recent victory of getting the Indian Government to establish an empowered commission on Bhopal. ICJB looks forward to making the 25 th Anniversary a pivotal step towards victory.

The ICJB coalition's lead organizations recognized by this award are: Association for India's Development, Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Stationery Karmachari Sangh, Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Purush Sangarsh Morcha, Bhopal Group for Information and Action, Environmental Health Fund, Pesticide Action Network North America, and Students for Bhopal. Support organizations include: Amnesty International, Global Alliance for Incineration Alternatives, Health Care Without Harm, and International POPs Elimination Network.

BEN's mission "is to help transform the role of corporations in society by building the capacity of our members in their corporate campaign work, by providing education, facilitating collaboration, and increasing recognition of their campaign successes with the funding community and the public," read more about them on their website. Since 2005, BEN has awarded winning corporate campaigns with the BENNY Award, and in 2007 they introduced the Path the Victory Award to recognize campaigns that have had achievements that are critical steps on the path to the campaign's victory.
