ANNE MUGISHA: Uganda not deserving of Security Council slot

http://www.observer.ug/index.php?...sk=view&id=1293&Itemid=64

Excerpt:

The UN Charter entrusts the UN Security Council with maintaining international peace and security. There are five permanent members of the UN Security Council originally drawn from the victorious powers after World War II: France, China, Russia, United Kingdom, and USA. Ten other members are elected by the General Assembly for two-year terms starting on 1st January, with five replaced each year. The members are chosen by regional groups and confirmed by the United Nations General Assembly. The African bloc chooses three members.

This year Uganda is campaigning for membership on the UN Security Council. The temptation to ignore this campaign is overwhelming for many opposition activists principally because we know that the international community, particularly western countries, are set on picking allies in Africa that appear to pass the lowest standard possible in the area of political and human rights as long as they support western interests.

Moreover they do so with the full acquiescence of African leaders who have accepted their position as underdogs in the world order and by so doing have repeatedly reaffirmed the belief that indeed their people are the scum of the earth. In that regard western democracies and African dictators have developed a remarkably resilient relationship that exists in spite of the wishes and interests of the African people.

I was stirred from resigned acceptance of Uganda’s membership on the UNSC by an article by Georgianne Nienaber http://www.huffingtonpost.com/geo...-does-not-deserve-s_b_130853.html in the Huffington Post of October 1, 2008. Ms. Nienaber is outraged that Uganda is being considered for a seat on the Security Council so she writes; ‘There is a critical issue facing the United Nations Security Council in the coming weeks that gives the United States great leverage in Central Africa, but it has not merited a single mention... Our lack of attention to international issues could become the prelude to more tragedy. In the next week or so, Uganda will be pulling out all stops to gain a seat on the United Nations Security Council…In the article she quotes Maurice Carney of Friends of the Congo stating that “Uganda is certainly an agent of the US wreaking havoc on the African continent particularly in the Congo. The International Court of Justice clearly stated that the DRC is entitled to $10 billion in reparations for the looting of Congo’s resources and human rights abuses on its soil by Ugandan military and its proxies…” He sarcastically adds; “Invade other countries and kill your fellow African and you get rewarded with a seat on the UNSC, what a travesty it would be to legitimize such actions as a route to such a prestigious post,” Carney said.

Please post this story everywhere that you can.

Note the reference to our very own esteemed Georgianne Nienaber.

The link to the Weekly Observe article given above should allow easy posting to many sites. Opednews might be a problem because they've banned Georgianne, but the editors aren't likely to actually read or understand the article, so it might be possible.

Sort of a shame the petition is on Care2, but sometimes it is possible for something good to slip through the cracks of an evil system.

So who is making a REAL difference in the world? Yay, Georgianne!
