The U.S. has standards for radiation exposure and insists that there is nothing wrong with low levels of exposure due to routine radioactive releases from nuclear power plants, nuclear carriers, etc.

It is unlikely that anyone in the U.S. is safe from low level exposure to radioactivity.

The sailboat I lived aboard for 12 years was moored near North Island Naval Air Station which has a lot of nuclear carriers and a nuclear waste dump. They said that the reason they didn't install a warning system, an evacuation plan, and make iodine pills available was because they didn't want residents to panic in the event of an accident.

Makes me think of the boiling frog analogy. If they killed us quickly, we might gripe about it, but when they do it slowly, we get used to it.
